New Zealand Certificate in English Language

Level 4

The aim of this programme is to produce graduates with knowledge and practical academic abilities to undertake higher-level tertiary study including health and wellbeing sector. 

Graduates will have developed language skills to be confident and competent to independently and effectively communicate from processing information for reading, writing, speaking, and listening in academic settings and contexts, both familiar and less familiar situations. 

This qualification allows educational institutions to make informed judgements regarding the level at which the graduate can use English for academic purposes.

Employment/Community Pathway

Holders of this Certificate will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:

  • interpersonal communication

  • understanding of context-specific texts of a more academic nature

  • writing records and reports

  • interaction in a team

Graduate of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge required to work in vocational contexts such as community, residential, hospital care facilities for disability; or work in a range of settings such as non-governmental organisations, social services, residential and community. 

Education Pathways

This Certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) [Ref: 3667] and can lead to:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 5) [Ref: 1884]

This Certificate may facilitate meeting the language requirements for:

  • many vocational and undergraduate programmes/courses and specialised fields of study requiring lower and/or Level 5 for entrance.
